Kick-off Meeting of ISO/PWI 25534-1 (Digital product passport—Part 1: Overview and fundamental principles)
Background

The circular economy emphasizes efficient resource utilization while reducing consumption and emissions. Digitalization plays a critical role in advancing its development and fostering business model innovation. The Digital Product Passport (DPP) provides comprehensive information across a product's life cycle, facilitating enterprise transformation and sustainability efforts.

To effectively support cross-sector systems and multi-participant data interactions, the DPP must meet key requirements such as unified standards, security, reliability, strong interoperability, efficient data processing, and multi-device compatibility. Despite its growing importance, there remains a lack of common, universally accepted technical specifications to guide stakeholders across countries and industries in creating an interoperable DPP system.

On October 23, 2024, the international standard project "Digital Product Passport—Part 1: Overview and Fundamental Principles" (ISO/PWI 25534-1) was officially registered. This initiative is a joint development between UNECE and ISO. As the foundational part of the DPP standards series, this standard will provide a comprehensive overview and establish core principles for developing a global DPP standard system. It aims to foster a unified understanding of DPP architecture at the international level and support subsequent standardization efforts.
